Stephen Salters
About
Stephen Salters is an acclaimed baritone and Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Tennessee's Natalie L. Haslam College of Music. The Washington Post describes him as someone who sounds like God on a good day while being intensely imaginative and adventurous with daring musical choices. He has performed internationally with major orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Boston Symphony. Notable recent work includes creating the title role in Elena Ruehr's dance opera Toussaint Before the Spirits and performances of Mahler's Das Lied Von der Erde and the Brahms Requiem in New York City. Salters is recognized as a champion of contemporary classical music, having commissioned numerous works from composers including William Bolcom and Pierre Ruscher. He is the first American winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition (1996) and winner of the 1999 Walter W. Naumburg International Competition, making him the first and only musician to win both competitions in their combined 180-year histories. He has conducted masterclasses globally for 25 years and founded the Until Now residency for emerging singers.
