Stephen Kalm
About
Stephen Kalm is a distinguished baritone who serves as Professor of Music at the University of Montana, where he has led the opera program since joining the faculty in 1994. He previously served as Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Kalm holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, a Master of Arts from Queens College, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from The City University of New York (2000). His performance career includes appearances with the Houston Grand Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Lake George Opera Festival, Minnesota Opera, Connecticut Opera, Cincinnati Opera, and The Pennsylvania Opera Theatre. International venues include Carnegie Hall, The Next Wave Festival at BAM, The Lincoln Center Festival, The Knitting Factory, and the Bang on the Can Festival. Kalm has performed extensively with Montana orchestras including Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Glacier, Great Falls, Helena, and Missoula Symphony Orchestras, as well as Montana Lyric Opera and the String Orchestra of the Rockies. In 1997, he received a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award for his performance in Meredith Monks opera The Politics of Quiet, and his performance of The Wayward was selected as one of the top ten performances of 2014 by the NY Times.
