Stephen F. Austin
About
Dr. Stephen F. Austin is Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy and Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies at the University of North Texas College of Music. He received a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from UNT and earned his Ph.D. in Voice Science from the University of Iowa under the direction of renowned voice scientist Dr. Ingo Titze. Dr. Austin taught voice and vocal pedagogy at Louisiana State University for 11 years, where he directed the Laboratory for Research of the Singing Voice, before joining the UNT faculty in 2001. His scientific research focuses on measurement and analysis of the acoustics and physiology of the singing voice, and he has published extensively in The Journal of Voice. He has been primary author and editor of the popular "Provenance" column in Journal of Singing since 2005. Dr. Austin is recognized as one of the leading experts in vocal pedagogy in the United States and around the world. He serves on the Editorial Board of Journal of Singing, chairs the Voice Science Advisory Committee of NATS, and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of The Voice Foundation.
