Roberta Gumbel
About
Roberta Gumbel is a Professor of the Practice in Voice & Opera at the University of Kansas School of Music. With a distinguished career spanning Broadway and international opera stages, she has performed in major productions including Showboat, Ragtime, Baz Luhrmann's La Boheme, and In My Life on Broadway. She made her professional debut with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and has performed with Michigan Opera Theater, Indianapolis Opera, Opera Memphis, and Philadelphia Opera. A frequent soloist with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Gumbel spent 18 years in New York City before joining KU. She holds a Master of Music degree from Indiana University and is also a librettist and creator of the award-winning chamber opera dwb (driving while black).
