Robert Osborne is a distinguished bass-baritone who serves on the voice faculty of Vassar College, Columbia University/Barnard College, and Nassau Community College. He holds a BA from Wesleyan University and an MA, MM, and PhD from Yale University, bringing exceptional academic and performance credentials to his teaching. His professional singing career encompasses over forty operatic roles in works by composers including Bernstein, Glass, Rameau, and Weill, with performances in Paris, Lyon, Berlin, New York, Houston, Santa Fe, Anchorage, and Los Angeles. Much of his musical life has been devoted to 20th and 21st century works, performing with cutting-edge ensembles and venues including the Concertgebouw, Sonic Boom Festival, Boston Musica Viva, and Lincoln Center Festival. He has researched, recorded, and performed extensively the vocal music of John Alden Carpenter, Henry Cowell, Franz Waxman, Leo Sowerby, and Harry Partch. A dedicated singer of art songs, he has presented recitals throughout the United States and in France, Spain, and Italy. His solo recordings include Songs of Henry Cowell, Songs of Leo Sowerby, and Songs of John Alden Carpenter on the Albany label, and Orchestral Songs of Shostakovich on Arabesque. His teaching draws on this vast performance and research experience, particularly benefiting students interested in contemporary classical repertoire and art song interpretation.
