Rachel Calloway
About
Rachel Calloway is an internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano and Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of South Carolina School of Music, where she also serves as Director of Spark: Carolina's Music Leadership Laboratory. Specializing in contemporary and modern music, she is a leading interpreter of new works and has premiered hundreds of compositions with acclaimed ensembles including the JACK Quartet and Third Coast Percussion. The New York Times has praised her for 'penetrating clarity' and 'considerable depth of expression,' while Opera News noted her 'adept musicianship and dramatic flair.' Her operatic performances span prestigious venues including Opera Philadelphia and the Glimmerglass Festival. Calloway is a founding member of Shir Ami, dedicated to preserving lost Jewish art music, and co-founded Duo Cortona with violinist Ari Streisfeld. She serves on the faculty of the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy and the Summer Performing Arts program with Juilliard in Switzerland. Her recordings appear on Albany Records, Tzadik Records, BCMF Records, and Toccata Classics.
