Dr. Paul Houghtaling is Professor of Voice, Co-Coordinator of Voice, and Director of Opera at the University of Alabama School of Music. A bass-baritone, Dr. Houghtaling has established himself as a leading voice teacher and opera director in the Southeast. He holds a BA from College of the Holy Cross, BM from New England Conservatory of Music, MA from Hunter College CUNY, and DMA from City University of New York. Dr. Houghtaling served as President of the National Opera Association from 2018 to 2020 and is the Artistic Director of Druid City Opera, which he founded as Druid City Opera Workshop in 2010 and transitioned to Alabamas first professional opera company in 2022. His dedication to teaching has earned him numerous awards including the Morris Lehman Mayer faculty award, Druid Arts Award for Music Educator of the Year, Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, Presidents Faculty Research Award, and Blackmon-Moody Outstanding Faculty Award.
