Paul Groves
About
Paul Groves is an acclaimed American tenor serving as Artist-in-Residence at Louisiana State University School of Music. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he studied at LSU under the mentorship of Professor Robert Grayson and came to national attention as a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1991. He is a graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Development Program and made his prestigious Metropolitan Opera debut in 1992. In 1995, he won the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, one of the highest honors in American opera. As a premiere leading tenor at the Metropolitan Opera, Paul Groves has enjoyed an impressive international career performing at the world's leading opera houses and concert halls. He made his debut at Italy's La Scala in 1995 as Tamino in the opening night performance of Die Zauberflöte, conducted by renowned maestro Riccardo Muti. His operatic roles at the MET include Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni opposite Bryn Terfel and Renée Fleming, and he created the role of Jianli in Tan Dun's The First Emperor in 2006. He has performed at prestigious venues including Royal Opera Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper, Opéra de Paris, and other major European houses. As a concert artist, he has performed with leading orchestras including Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and numerous others, with over 80 recordings released on renowned labels including Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Sony Classics, Phillips Classics, and Naxos.
