Monica Huisman is a lyric soprano and voice instructor at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba, bringing extensive international performance experience to her teaching. She has performed on the stages of Vancouver Opera, Calgary Opera, Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, The Netherlands Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera Ontario and Saskatoon Opera in various productions, demonstrating her versatility across the Canadian opera landscape and internationally. Monica regularly tours Canada and abroad with prestigious organizations such as National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, maintaining an active performing career alongside her teaching. She is fluent in English, Dutch, Italian, and conversational in French, bringing valuable linguistic expertise to her teaching of opera and art song repertoire. Ms. Huisman enjoys an active teaching career and is in demand both as an adjudicator and clinician throughout Manitoba and beyond. She has taught several successful voice students who have gone on to notable careers, including Sawyer Craig, who describes her as "an amazing guide towards singing – and living – really honestly." Opera was always part of the Huisman household, with Monica appearing in many Manitoba Opera productions alongside her mother, Anna Huisman, who also had a long history with the company. Monica's teaching emphasizes honest, authentic singing while building solid technical foundations.
