Michelle DeYoung
About
Michelle DeYoung is an Associate Professor of Music (Voice) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she teaches private voice lessons and contributes to the internationally renowned voice program. A multi-Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano, DeYoung is regarded as one of the most exciting artists of her generation. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 1992 and has been a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera ever since. DeYoung maintains an active performance schedule with major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, and others. Her extensive opera experience includes performances at prestigious houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teatro alla Scala, Bayreuth Festival, San Francisco Opera, and Los Angeles Opera. She has achieved particular success in portraying Wagnerian roles including Fricka and Sieglinde in The Ring Cycle, Kundry in Parsifal, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde, and Venus in Tannhäuser. As a recording artist, DeYoung has won multiple Grammy Awards, including recognition for her recordings of Mahler works with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony. She has collaborated with renowned conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Colin Davis, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Bernard Haitink.
