Michelle DeBruyn
About
Dr. Michelle DeBruyn is Professor at Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music, where she teaches Studio Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, Yoga for Performers, and Professional Materials for Vocal Performers. She completed both her Masters of Music (2002) and Doctorate of Musical Arts (2005) in Vocal Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. Although at home in all major musical styles, Dr. DeBruyn has been praised for her interpretation of 20th and 21st Century English art song. She specializes in contemporary English art song and actively premieres new works by modern composers. Her performance experience spans recitals, ensemble collaborations, and international tours including two performances in Taiwan. Dr. DeBruyn has served on the faculty since August 2005. Her pedagogical interests focus on wellness for musicians, including yoga and meditation, voice registration, Contemporary Commercial Music, and technique convergence between singers and instrumentalists. She holds Advanced Yoga Teaching Certification (2017) and Somatic VoiceworkTM Level I, II, and III certification. She received the College of the Arts Regents Teaching Award (2016), Georgia NATSAA Winner (2008), NATS Emerging Leaders Award (2010), and Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival nomination. She serves as executive officer of the Faculty Senate and music director for many main stage Department of Theatre and Dance musicals. Past students have been accepted to study at major institutions including Eastman, Indiana University, SMU, Manhattan School of Music, and Westminster Choir College.
