About

Dr. Mark Tempesta serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of North Texas College of Music. He holds bachelor's degrees in voice performance and physics from Oberlin College, an additional degree from Boston University, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice Pedagogy from New England Conservatory. As a researcher, Dr. Tempesta's scholarly work focuses on using artificial intelligence to compare laryngeal gestures and vocal fold vibration patterns between contemporary and classical singers to improve student outcomes. He also explores small-scale acoustics to better understand vocal fold physical mechanics at phonation onset, and works to expand classical vocal registration concepts to reflect broader voice possibilities. Dr. Tempesta is passionate about enabling voice students to conduct their own research and has mentored student projects on topics ranging from examining the effects of hormonal changes on the singing voice to the effects of vocal training on breathing patterns in speech and daily life. As a performer, Dr. Tempesta is an award-winning operatic tenor who has performed leading roles with companies including Sarasota Opera, Shreveport Opera, Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Opera Company of Middlebury, and Odyssey Opera. He earned the Outstanding Performer Award at the Metropolitan International Music Competition in 2018.
