Laura J is an award-winning singer-songwriter and accomplished vocal coach with eight years of professional teaching experience. She brings both technical expertise and real-world performance success to her instruction at Blue Sky Music Studios in the Albany area. Laura holds a Bachelor's degree in Writing and Communications from Houghton University (2017), providing her with strong communication skills and creative foundations that inform her teaching methodology. As a recognized musician, Laura has been selected as one of the top ten Capital Region songwriters for the 2024 INK Songwriter's Retreat, demonstrating her standing in the regional music community. Her songwriting accomplishments include earning the prestigious 2025 New Jersey Songwriter's Summit Prize, the 2022 Poetry Scholarship from Hudson Valley Writers Guild, the 2019 Songwriting Scholarship from Image Magazine, and the 2024 Songwriting Scholarship from Music Masters Collective. Beyond songwriting, Laura earned the 2017 Lucy Monro Brooker Poetry Prize, showcasing her versatility as an artist. She performs regionally under the name Girl Love and released her sophomore album Girl Love in 2023, bringing professional recording and performance experience to her teaching. Laura teaches beginner through advanced students in voice and songwriting, plus beginner guitar, making her a versatile educator who can guide students across multiple musical disciplines. Her specializations include indie-folk, musical theater, pop, and jazz instruction.
