About

Dr. LaToya Lain is an Associate Professor of Voice and member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus. She is a soprano who received her undergraduate education at Howard University and graduate degrees from the University of Michigan. Dr. Lain teaches private voice instruction and The History and Performance Practice of the Negro Spiritual at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on the intensive study and performance practice of Negro Spirituals, and she has performed her lecture recital "Narrative of a Slave Woman: Songs of Hope, Justice, and Freedom" on concert stages and universities throughout the world. Dr. Lain recently made her Metropolitan Opera debut in The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess and is a member of the GRAMMY Award-winning cast of Porgy and Bess at The Metropolitan Opera. Before joining UNC Chapel Hill, Dr. Lain served on the voice faculties of Central Michigan University, New York University, and Oakwood University.
