Lara Wilson
About
Dr. Lara Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she oversees the opera program and teaches voice to undergraduate and graduate students. She holds a DMA in Voice Performance from the University of South Carolina School of Music, an MM in Voice from Indiana University, and a BM in Voice from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. With over 25 years of experience in both performance and vocal pedagogy, Dr. Wilson specializes in music theater, contemporary, and classical vocal styles. Her research and teaching focus on vocal cross-training, a method of teaching multiple styles aimed at developing more flexible and successful singers. As a performer, Dr. Wilson debuted off-Broadway with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players as Lady Blanche in Princess Ida and later appeared as Lady Sangazure in the critically acclaimed production of The Sorcerer. She has performed with numerous opera companies and orchestras throughout the United States. In addition to her academic role, Dr. Wilson is an accomplished voice-over actress and performs in the jazz combo Eleven11 and rock band 48 Fables. Previously, she served as a Visiting Professor of Voice at Valdosta State University and as an adjunct instructor at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Coker University. Dr. Wilson also co-founded the Charleston Chamber Opera in 2007, producing and directing creatively staged performances for major festivals and concert series.
