Dr. Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk is a Professor of Voice and Associate Dean of the Honors College at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She is a soprano whose singing has been praised by the Journal of Singing for her commendable clarity and rich expressiveness. Dr. Hurst-Wajszczuk holds a DMA from UAB and has built an international reputation for her vocal artistry and scholarly contributions to music education. Her solo CD of world premieres of Lori Laitman's The Secret Exit and Diana Rosenblum's Winter Rain was released by Naxos in 2020. She is a specialist in the lute songs of John Dowland and has sung with Early Music Vancouver's Compleat Singer Programme. Her solo oratorio repertoire ranges from Bach to Samuel Barber, while her operatic roles span from Monteverdi to Stravinsky. Dr. Hurst-Wajszczuk has appeared with Opera Birmingham in various productions, including Opera Shots, and notably created the role of Mary Rose in Jody Landers's new opera Now Let Us Praise Famous Men. She debuted with the Boulder Bach Festival in 2004 and with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in 2011. As an award-winning opera director, her productions have won first, second, and third place awards through the National Opera Association. Her research and teaching interests encompass Performance Anxiety Management, Meditation for Musicians, Body Mapping and the Alexander Technique, and vocal pedagogy.
