About
Kirstin Chavez is an internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano and Professor of Voice at the University of Utah School of Music, where she serves as Artist in Residence and Vocal Area Coordinator. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she spent formative years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where her parents taught English and music. Chavez is known for her signature role as Carmen, which Opera News described as featuring a dark, generous mezzo, earthy eroticism, volcanic spontaneity and smoldering charisma. She has performed leading roles across the world's most prestigious opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House London, Welsh National Opera, and numerous international venues. Her versatile repertoire spans classical and contemporary opera, with notable performances in modern American operas by composers such as Tobias Picker and Jake Heggie. At the University of Utah, she teaches private voice lessons and conducts an independent study course titled 12 Steps to Role Preparation for advanced students. Her combination of magnificent vocal range, dramatic intensity, and natural physical beauty has made her one of the most riveting and significant performing mezzo-sopranos of her generation.
