Dr. John Hugo is the Chair of the Department of Ensembles and General Music Studies and a Professor of Music at Liberty University, where he has been a dedicated educator since fall 1988. He specializes in vocal music instruction, music history, and choral conducting. Dr. Hugo holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Music from Arizona State University, a Masters degree in Vocal Performance from Arizona State University, and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music. His extensive education culminated in a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Houghton College. Beyond his teaching responsibilities at Liberty, he serves as the director of the Roanoke Symphony Chorus and performs as a tenor soloist with the Bellezza Chamber Ensemble. Dr. Hugo actively participates in professional music organizations including ACDA, NATS, and NAfME, where he serves as an adjudicator for musical organizations throughout Virginia. He has also published compositions for choir and voice, contributing to the broader musical community. His comprehensive approach combines rigorous technical instruction with musical scholarship and performance excellence.
