John Avey is a well-known, experienced and respected member of Canada's bass-baritone fraternity and Professor of Voice at the University of Ottawa's School of Music. His repertoire encompasses a wide range of major operatic and concert works, demonstrating his versatility and commanding vocal presence. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and subsequently appeared there as Germont in Verdi's La Traviata, establishing himself on one of the world's most prestigious opera stages. Throughout his distinguished career, John has performed with major opera companies across Canada and internationally, bringing depth and dramatic intensity to a diverse array of bass-baritone roles. His extensive professional experience includes performances in the standard repertoire from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner, and French opera, as well as oratorio works by Handel, Bach, Haydn, and contemporary composers. At the University of Ottawa, he brings his wealth of performance knowledge to developing students pursuing Bachelor of Music degrees in voice performance, helping them build solid technical foundations while exploring the rich bass-baritone repertoire from Baroque through contemporary periods.
