Joachim Schamberger
About
Joachim Schamberger is an internationally acclaimed stage director and Artist-in-Residence at Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, where he serves as Director of Opera. Originally from Germany, he is a graduate of the Musikhochschule in Würzburg, the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, and the prestigious Merola Opera Program of the San Francisco Opera. His productions have been performed across the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Brazil, Norway, Israel, Japan, and China. At Northwestern, Schamberger chooses, produces, and directs three operas each academic year, teaches opera workshops, and coaches voice students in vocal and dramatic interpretation, style and language coaching. He brings innovative approaches to operatic production, including his reconceptualization of Monteverdi L'Orfeo as an experimental opera film during the COVID-19 pandemic. His work emphasizes contemporary themes, as exemplified by his 2018 production of Mozart Don Giovanni set in present-day New York, highlighting themes of power, abuse, and consent.
