Dr. Jean Hickman is an Associate Professor of Choral/Vocal Music at Daytona State College, where she brings extensive experience in vocal education and choral conducting. She holds a PhD in music education and choral conducting from the University of Florida and a Master of Music in Voice from the University of South Dakota. During her graduate studies at UF, Dr. Hickman served as a Teaching Fellow directing the Women's Chorale, Mixed Vocal Jazz, and Women's Vocal Jazz Choirs while also working as a vocal jazz coach. A highlight of her graduate training was a conducting fellowship in Vienna, Austria, where she conducted the Brahms Requiem with festival chorus and orchestra. She has served as Assistant Professor of Music at Morningside College directing choirs and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in music education. Prior to her Florida position, Dr. Hickman served as Humanities Assistant Division Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Western Iowa Tech Community College and taught in the public schools of Sioux City, Iowa. Her work in public schools earned her Teacher of the Year recognition, and she has received professional honors including the Morningside College Distinguished Alumni Award and the University of Iowa Outstanding Educator Award. At Daytona State College, she directs the Daytona State College Jazz Singers and coordinates vocal auditions for the college music program.
