James Taylor
About
James Taylor is a distinguished Professor in the Practice of Voice at Yale University with a joint appointment at Yale Institute of Sacred Music, where he has taught since 2005. He is recognized internationally as one of the most sought-after Bach tenors of his generation, having performed and recorded extensively with many of today's preeminent Bach specialists, including Nicholas Harnoncourt, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Ton Koopman, Hans-Christoph Rademann, and Masaaki Suzuki. In 2008, he debuted with the New York Philharmonic under conductor Kurt Masur, singing the role of the Evangelist in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Taylor maintains an extensive repertoire ranging from the medieval period to the twenty-first century and devotes much of his career to oratorio and concert literature. He provides private voice lessons to graduate-level vocalists in the early music, oratorio, and art song program. His students benefit from his deep knowledge of historically-informed performance practice.
Education & Qualifications
Studied at Texas Christian University as a student of Arden Hopkin. Fulbright Scholar at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, graduating in 1993 with a Meisterklassendiplom. Member of the Young Ensemble at the Bavarian State Opera from 1992-1994. Previous teaching experience as Professor of Voice at the Hochschule für Musik in Augsburg, Germany.
