Ian Howell
About
Dr. Ian Howell is a voice teacher and pedagogue based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, specializing in classical voice instruction. As a classical countertenor, he has sung on most major international concert stages as both a soloist and a member of the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Chanticleer. From 2013-2023, Dr. Howell was a member of the studio voice faculty at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he also directed the graduate voice pedagogy program, led research in the NEC Voice and Sound Analysis Laboratory, and coached students in Baroque voice repertory. Ian has an affinity for working with countertenors and coaching all voice types in the expressive interpretation of baroque music. He is the Founder and Chief Educator at the Embodied Music Lab, an organization that offers professional development and consulting for musicians and teachers. His teaching methodology emphasizes simultaneous development of vocal function and artistry, working methodically and collaboratively to help students organize their thoughts and coordinate their bodies. Ian offers both online lessons and in-person instruction in Ann Arbor.

Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA). Former faculty at New England Conservatory of Music (2013-2023) where he directed the graduate voice pedagogy program and led research in the Voice and Sound Analysis Laboratory.
