Dr. Hannah Penn is a mezzo-soprano celebrated for her musicality and the rich timbre of her voice. She has performed over twenty operatic roles with esteemed companies, including Glimmerglass Opera, Portland Opera, Florida Grand Opera, and Tacoma Opera. As a Portland Opera studio artist, she performed roles including Diana (La Calisto), Thisbe (La Cenerentola), Mercedes (Carmen), Flora (La Traviata), and Nancy (Albert Herring). Her performances include notable guest appearances as Julie in Show Boat and L'enfant in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortileges. She has premiered new works including John Adams' El Nino, Richard Rodney Bennett's The Mines of Sulphur, and David Carlson's Anna Karenina. As an educator, Dr. Penn holds faculty positions at Portland State University and Willamette University in Salem, along with lecture positions at Portland Opera and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. She received her doctorate of musical arts from New England Conservatory, where she rediscovered and reconstructed a lost American opera. As a dedicated and passionate teacher, Dr. Penn believes that all students sing better when they are comfortable, seen, and inspired, striving to unlock each student's special potential through correct repertoire, honoring the natural voice, and physically and psychologically motivating all sounds.
