Gayle Shay
About
Gayle Shay is an Associate Professor of Voice and Director of the Vanderbilt Opera Theatre at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, where she joined the faculty in 1998. As a mezzo-soprano, she is an accomplished performer and guest director in musical theater, opera, and oratorio at venues throughout the country. She serves as Voice Department Chair and has been instrumental in establishing opera as an essential component of Vanderbilt's vocal program. The Vanderbilt Opera Theatre, which she directs, is open by audition to all Vanderbilt students and presents up to two productions annually in the fall and spring semesters. Under her leadership, the program has produced innovative and critically acclaimed productions, including creative interpretations of classic works by Mozart and other composers. Her teaching approach combines rigorous classical training with contemporary performance techniques, preparing students for successful careers in opera and vocal performance. She is committed to developing well-rounded singers who excel in multiple vocal genres.
