Drew Minter

About

Drew Minter is a Senior Lecturer in Music at Vassar College, where he has served on the faculty since 1999, teaching singing, directing the Vassar Chamber Singers (formerly the Madrigal Singers), and leading the Vassar Opera Workshop. For four decades, Drew was regarded as one of the world's leading countertenors, performing extensively in opera, oratorio, chamber music, and recitals across North America and Europe. He grew up as a boy treble in the Washington Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys and continued his musical education at Indiana University and the Musik Hochschule of Vienna. He is especially associated with early music groups, some of which he cofounded, including Ensemble V/I, TREFOIL, My Lord Chamberlain's Consort, and The Newberry Consort, with which he sang for 25 seasons in Chicago. A recognized specialist in the works of Handel, he performed frequently at the Handel festivals of Göttingen, Halle, Karlsruhe, and Maryland. Drew has made over 70 recordings on labels including Harmonia Mundi, Decca/London, and Hungaroton. From 2006-2011, he co-founded and served as artistic director of Boston Midsummer Opera, and he directed operas at the Goettingen Handel Festival for five years. He has taught each summer since 1989 for the Amherst Early Music Festival, directing their annual opera for twenty years. His teaching brings together his extensive performance experience with deep knowledge of historical performance practice and vocal technique.
