David Radamés Toro

David Radamés Toro is the Assistant Professor and Acting Artistic Director of Opera at Arizona State University's School of Music, Dance and Theatre. A Latino American opera director who integrates training in music and mime to develop innovative productions, Toro emphasizes cultural relevance, diverse representation, and a modern opera experience. Originally trained as an opera singer, he transitioned to directing while earning graduate degrees in voice performance and pedagogy. He holds a DMA in Opera Directing from The University of Texas, MM/MA in Voice Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from The Ohio State University, and BM in Voice Performance from The University of Colorado at Boulder. His professional directing credits include Minnesota Opera, Washington National Opera, Seattle Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Cincinnati Opera, Wexford Opera Festival, Central City Opera, Opera Saratoga, and Tri-Cities Opera. In September 2025, he made his Arizona Opera main-stage debut directing the premiere of Zorro. At ASU, Toro teaches acting for the opera stage, physical theatre, and coaches singers in interpretation and audition preparation. His workshops in Gestural Mechanics are influenced by Meisner technique, Suzuki/Viewpoints, and classical mime.
