Christine Howlett
About
Dr. Christine Howlett is Professor of Music on the George Sherman Dickinson Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Vassar College, where she directs the Vassar College Choir and Treble Chorus, and teaches music theory and voice. She served as chair of the Music Department from 2016-2020 and 2021-2023. Dr. Howlett earned a Master's Degree in Early Music Voice Performance and a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting from Indiana University, and studied Vocal Performance at the University of Toronto. Her choirs have performed at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, and have toured internationally to Cuba, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Turkey, and Uganda. In 2023, she was named music director of the Greenwich Choral Society, and since 2006 has directed Cappella Festiva, supporting an adult community choir and two children's choruses in the Hudson Valley. As Past-President of the New York American Choral Directors Association, she supports over 600 choral directors statewide. A champion of contemporary music, Dr. Howlett has commissioned and premiered choral works by notable composers including Libby Larsen and Tarik O'Regan. Her teaching encompasses both individual voice instruction and choral conducting, drawing on her extensive experience as both a performer and conductor across multiple genres and historical periods.
