Carolena Mátus

About

Carolena Mátus is a jazz vocalist, educator, and voice teacher with over 40 years of vocal expertise. She leads the Carolena Mátus JaZz Group and teaches private voice lessons specializing in vocal mechanics and artistry. Carolena made her first public appearance as a soloist at age 7 (piano and voice duo) and began formal vocal training at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at age 13. Though her formative training was based in opera, classical and musical theatre, she developed a passion for big band jazz due to her father's influence and was reintroduced to jazz through Frank Sinatra, Jr. in the mid-1980s. Her jazz education came through working with professional musicians including Bobby Scann (trombonist who trained her to hear music as a musician), Joe Baque (who performed with Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Lena Horne, and Ernestine Anderson), and other jazz greats. She spent the majority of her career performing in Las Vegas before relocating to the Pacific Northwest. Carolena is a professional member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and a collaborative partner with Virginia Mason Otolaryngology Voice Clinic. She offers live online voice lessons via Zoom and FaceTime, having taught students internationally including in South Korea, Italy, and across the United States.
