Brenda Witmer

Brenda Witmer is an Instructor of Voice at James Madison University's School of Music in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she has taught since 1993. A soprano praised by The Washington Post for singing 'with deep emotional involvement and an upper register of pure silver,' Witmer brings a wealth of performance experience and pedagogical expertise to her teaching. Her performance career has spanned international festivals including events in the Czech Republic, France, Belgium, and Italy. She established her first voice studio in Paris, France, before moving to Harrisonburg to begin her distinguished teaching career at JMU. As an active member of both the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the College Music Society, Witmer has contributed to the advancement of vocal pedagogy through collaborative lecture-recitals presented at national conventions. Her teaching has produced notable outcomes, with voice majors advancing to prestigious graduate programs and music theater alumni appearing in national touring productions of major Broadway shows. Witmer holds a Master of Music in vocal performance from James Madison University and a Bachelor's degree in Music from Goshen College in Indiana. She resides outside Harrisonburg near the Massanutten mountains, and maintains active hobbies including beekeeping and yoga practice, which she relates to vocal technique and performance excellence.
