Dr. Amy Porter is a highly accomplished soprano and educator serving as a Lecturer in the Music Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where she has taught since 2013. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University, completing her doctoral coursework there, along with a Master of Music and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College of Music in New York City. A native of New Orleans, Amy spent her formative years in Texas before returning to Louisiana to pursue flute and vocal performance in college. Her professional career encompasses both distinguished performance and innovative teaching. As a professional soprano, Amy has performed a host of acclaimed bel canto and standard operatic roles, including the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Violetta in La Traviata, and Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor. She remains an active performer, having appeared recently as a featured soloist with Inland Northwest Opera, Spokane Symphony, Spokane Kantorei Choir and Collegium Orchestra, and Chorale Coeur d'Alene. At Gonzaga, she teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy, song literature, and ear training labs. Beyond her classroom teaching, Amy serves as Director of the Discantus Treble Choir and Artistic Director of the Spectrum Singers, and has served as interim director of the Gonzaga Music Department's Choirs and Voice Studies. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes both technical excellence and artistic expression, preparing students for success in performance and music education careers.
