Amy Cowan
About
Amy Cowan is an Assistant Professor of Practice at Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts with twenty years of professional experience working with voices of all ages and skill levels. She holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the prestigious Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Rice University in Houston. Additionally, she has completed certification training in Kodály Methodology from Holy Names University in Oakland, California. Before joining Virginia Tech in 2016, Cowan served as choir director and music director at institutions in California, where she also maintains an active private voice studio. Her teaching philosophy integrates a whole-body approach to vocal instruction, utilizing yoga methodology to develop healthy, sustainable singing technique. She has adjudicated regional choral festivals and demonstrates particular strength working with young singers and ensemble performance. Currently, she serves as Choir Director at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg.
