Weekly Session Limits
We’re introducing weekly session limits for the AI Coach. Each plan includes a weekly allowance of sessions, and users can purchase extra credits if they need more.
Weekly limits by plan
| Plan | Sessions per week |
|---|---|
| Starter | 3 sessions/week |
| Self Study | 6 sessions/week |
| Guided | 6 sessions/week |
| Legacy plans (PRO, Effective Learner) | 3 sessions/week |
How it works
- Unused sessions roll over to the next week (capped at 1-4 depending on plan).
- The week resets every Monday at midnight in the user’s timezone.
- When a user runs out of sessions, they see a prompt to either buy credits or upgrade their plan.
- Credit packs are 10 sessions each, purchased through secure checkout.
- Credit purchases are one-time payments, not subscriptions.
- Credits don’t expire.
What users will see
- Session balance shown on the AI Coach page (e.g. “3 sessions available”)
- Low sessions warning when sessions are running low
- When out of sessions: a modal directing the user to buy credits or upgrade
- A new quota page: /virtual-coach/quota showing balance breakdown, usage history, and purchase option

Starting a Session
Prepare Your Session
When you open AI Coach, you'll configure your session:
Duration: Choose how long you want to practice (5-60 minutes). The AI paces exercises to fit your time.
Focus Area (Optional): Tell the coach what you'd like to work on: - "I want to work on high notes today" - "My voice feels tired" - "Focus on breath control"
Recent Sessions: Review summaries from your previous sessions.
Warm-up video: While your plan is being prepared, you can play a short vocal warm-up video from the Singing Carrots library and warm up along with it. A different warm-up appears each session. If you're enrolled in the From Zero to Singing Hero course, warming up here for about a minute also checks off the day's warm-up task automatically.
Click "Create My Session Plan" to begin. The AI analyzes your progress and creates a personalized plan (this takes about 1-2 minutes).
The Session Interface
Desktop Layout
- Left side: Piano or stave visualization showing target notes and your pitch
- Right side: Chat area with your AI coach
Mobile Layout
- Chat takes the full screen
- Tap "Show Exercise" to see the piano or stave visualization
- Piano/stave overlay appears automatically when singing
- On phones, the keyboard automatically zooms to frame the notes in the current exercise so the keys stay large and legible (see the Fit control below)
Toolbar
- Session progress bar: A bar in the header that fills as you work through your planned session. It only moves forward and reaches the end when your plan is complete. On desktop it shows "Session X%" with the minutes you've practiced; on mobile, tap the bar for the same details.
- Rewards (carrot icon): Opens the Rewards pop-up showing your progress toward today's 300-note goal and your session milestone ladder (with a running carrot count). A small dot appears on the icon when you earn a new milestone.
- Microphone toggle: Enable/disable mic input
- Zoom controls & Fit: Adjust piano zoom level (piano view only). The Fit toggle snaps the keyboard back to frame the current exercise; any manual zoom or pan hands control back to you until you tap Fit again.
- View toggle: Switch between Piano and Stave (notation) view
- Finish button: End session and get feedback
- Settings: Adjust microphone and audio settings
Stave (Notation) View
Toggle between the piano roll and sheet music notation using the view mode buttons in the toolbar. The stave view renders exercises as traditional music notation with:
- Treble or bass clef (selected automatically based on note range)
- Key signature with proper accidentals
- Note durations with dots and ties
- Time signature (4/4)
- Solfege annotations (do, re, mi) below notes
Your view preference is remembered across sessions.
Availability: - Self-Study, Guided Edition: Full access to stave view - Starter Edition: Stave button is visible but shows an upgrade prompt when tapped - Legacy Plans: Not available
The AI coach is aware of your view mode access. If you have stave view, the coach may suggest switching to it when working on intervals, music theory, or sight-reading exercises.
Karaoke Lyrics
When an exercise has words, a karaoke-style lyrics bar appears on the piano-roll view (top of the chart on desktop, a band at the bottom on mobile). The current syllable is highlighted in time with the melody as the coach plays it and as you sing, so you never have to scroll back through chat to remember the words mid-breath.
- While you sing, past syllables are tinted green when you were on pitch and orange when you drifted, matching the bars beneath them.
- Tap the eye icon to collapse the bar to a "Show lyrics" chip, and tap again to bring it back.
- The lyrics bar appears only for exercises that have words; wordless drills and hums don't show it. (The stave view already prints lyrics beneath the notes, so the karaoke bar is specific to the piano-roll view.)
Session Progress & Pacing
The session progress bar in the header reflects how much of your planned work is done, not a countdown clock, so it ends when your plan is actually finished. If your pace drifts well off the plan — running long or finishing early — the coach posts a single, friendly check-in in the chat with two quick-reply choices (for example, "Keep going to finish" or "Wrap up now"). It's entirely your call; the coach never cuts a session short or replans on its own.
Exercise Flow
Each exercise follows this pattern:
1. Coach Gives Instructions
The AI explains the exercise and why it's helpful for you.
2. Listen
Click "Listen" to hear the melody first. Piano keys light up showing the target notes.
3. Sing
Click "Sing" to start. You'll see: - Blue lines: Target notes to hit - Red line: Your actual pitch - Green: Notes you hit on pitch - Yellow: Notes slightly off pitch
If the exercise has words, the karaoke lyrics bar highlights each syllable as you reach it.
4. See Results
After singing, you'll see: - Notes hit (e.g., "8 / 10") - Precision percentage - Sustain percentage
For exercises with words, the results also show your lyrics syllable by syllable, marked so you can see which words you nailed and which drifted sharp or flat.
Every green mark in the results - on the syllables and on the notation - always matches the "notes hit" count, so the visuals and the score tell the same story.
Occasionally the coach adds a short insight about the exercise you just sang (for example, that it's a pattern most singers find hard on first try). You can also open a small stats panel from the results to see your own history with that exercise and how it compares for other singers - framed around the exercise's difficulty, never a ranking of you.
5. Choose Next Action
- Listen Again: Replay the melody
- Sing Again: Retry the exercise
- Watch Replay: See your performance with your recorded audio
- Ask Coach: Get feedback and the next exercise
Note-hold (sustain) exercises
For breath-control work the coach may give you a "hold this note" exercise: instead of a melody, you sustain a single note as steadily as you can toward a target of several seconds. A progress panel replaces the note chart and shows your elapsed time versus the target, plus your best hold today and all-time.
Holding a note here earns the same sustain levels and carrot points as the standalone Sustain Training page - one level for every 5 seconds held - and they count toward the same daily stats, best day, and weekly leaderboard. When a hold earns carrots, a quiet "+N carrots" line appears under the result.
Challenges (Competitive Play)
If your plan includes the competitive Pitch Training difficulty tiers, the coach can offer a challenge mid-session: a real Pitch Training run played right inside your coach session.
How a challenge run works: - The exercise melody starts easy and climbs higher with every loop you clear - You have a limited number of hearts - missing notes costs them; the run ends when they're gone - Your score, carrots, and records count exactly like a run played on the Pitch Training page
After a run you can hit Try again for another attempt or Exit challenge to return to coaching - every finished run counts, and the coach reacts to your best one. If you set a strong score on the hard tier, a small rank card shows where the run lands on that level's monthly leaderboard, with a link to the full Level Rankings.
Your weekly competition standing also appears in the Rewards pop-up (the carrot icon). If you've hidden your profile, rankings respect that - your results stay private.
You can also just ask the coach for a challenge anytime: "give me a challenge" works.
Zero to Hero Course, Inside the Coach
The From Zero to Singing Hero beginner course can now be taken directly inside your AI Coach sessions - no need to switch pages.
Enrollment: If you're new to structured practice, the coach may introduce the course and offer to enroll you right in the chat. Accepting starts you on Week 1, Day 1.
Daily videos: During a session, the coach offers the current day's course videos as cards in the chat. Tap one to watch it in a pop-up. After a short minimum watch time, Mark done unlocks and awards the same carrot points as completing the task on the course page. Closing early is fine - your watch time is remembered if you come back to it.
Rewatching: Already finished a video? Ask the coach for any course video by name or topic and rewatch it anytime.
Practice counts automatically: Once you've watched the day's lesson video, a solid singing session with the coach can automatically complete the day's practice task - the coach lets you know when it happens.
Warm-ups count too: the session-start warm-up video checks off the day's warm-up task (see Starting a Session above).
Your course progress is one and the same everywhere - the course page and the coach always agree on where you are.
Chat with Your Coach
You can interact with the AI coach throughout your session:
After an exercise: - Click "Ask Coach" to submit your results and get the next exercise - Or type a message first to add context
Ask questions anytime: - "Why is my high G always flat?" - "Can we try something slower?" - "I'm having trouble with this pattern"
Request changes: - Ask for easier or harder exercises - Request specific note ranges - Ask to focus on particular skills
Coach Memory
Your AI coach remembers you between sessions, so practice feels like a continuation instead of starting from scratch each time. You're always in control of what it knows.
Open Coach memory (the brain icon) from the AI session page, the AI Coach dashboard, or the Home tab in the iOS app. A pop-up titled "What your coach remembers" shows two lists:
- Where you're headed — your goals
- What your coach knows about you — notes about your voice and preferences
The first time you open the coach, it drafts this profile from your onboarding answers (and your past sessions, if you have any). From the pop-up you can:
- Add your own notes to either list
- Remove an individual item (with a confirmation)
- Start fresh to clear everything
- Turn memory on or off with the "Let your coach remember me between sessions" checkbox
Items the coach added itself are tagged "From your coach"; notes you typed are shown plainly. You can keep up to 30 items.
Earning Milestones
As you practice, you earn milestones and carrot points. Your milestone ladder, today's note goal, and your session carrot count all live in the Rewards pop-up (the carrot icon in the toolbar) so they stay out of the way while you sing.
Milestones: 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300 notes
When you reach a milestone: - A celebration appears on screen - You earn carrot points - A dot appears on the Rewards icon; open it to see your updated progress and next goal
Finishing Your Session
Click "Finish & Get Feedback" when you're ready to end.
Session Summary includes: - Personalized feedback on your performance - What you did well - Areas for improvement - Recommendations for next time
Rate your session: Give 1-5 stars and optional written feedback to help improve the AI coach.
Settings
Click the gear icon to adjust:
Microphone: Select which microphone to use and test input levels.
Output Device: Select which speakers or headphones to use for audio playback. Use the Test button to play a note through the selected device.
Audio Latency: If using Bluetooth headphones, adjust the slider (100-200ms typical) to sync audio with visuals.
Bluetooth earbuds and recording: Bluetooth earbud microphones use a narrow phone-call audio mode that hurts pitch detection. When the coach detects this, it automatically records through your device's built-in microphone while you keep listening through your earbuds, and shows a one-time notice. You can still pick any microphone manually in Settings - your choice is respected.

FAQ
Q: How is AI Coach different from regular Pitch Training? A: Regular Pitch Training has fixed levels with preset exercises. AI Coach creates personalized sessions based on your history, adapts to your performance, and lets you chat with your coach.
Q: Is there an app? A: Yes. Singing Carrots AI Vocal Coach is a native app on the App Store for iPhone (iOS 15+). The AI Coach also runs in any modern web browser, and your progress syncs across both.
Q: What equipment do I need? A: Just a microphone (built-in works fine), headphones (recommended), and a quiet space. Works in the iOS app or any modern browser.
Q: How long should sessions be? A: 15-20 minutes is ideal for most users. The AI paces exercises to fit your selected duration.
Q: Can I ask the AI coach questions? A: Yes! Type any question in the chat. Ask about technique, request different exercises, or get feedback on challenges.
Q: Does progress carry over between sessions? A: Yes. The AI remembers your history and previous sessions, and each new session builds on what you've practiced before. It also keeps a short profile of your goals and what it's learned about your voice — open Coach memory anytime to view, add to, or clear it, or turn it off entirely.
Q: What if I leave and come back? A: If you return within a few hours, you can continue your session. After that, you'll see a summary of your previous session and can start fresh.
Q: Can I do the Zero to Hero course through the AI Coach? A: Yes. The coach can enroll you, plays the day's course videos in the chat, awards the same carrots for completing them, and can auto-complete the day's practice task after a solid singing session. Progress stays in sync with the course page.
Q: Why did my sound switch microphones when I connected Bluetooth earbuds? A: Bluetooth earbud mics use a low-quality phone-call mode that breaks pitch detection, so the coach records through your device's built-in mic instead while you keep listening through the earbuds. You can override this in Settings.
